Galway RNLI Lifeboat comes to assistance of yacht in difficulty off Hare Island

Galway RNLI Lifeboat went to the rescue of a yacht in difficulty off Hare Island in Galway Bay this morning (Thursday 18th June).
The 24-ft yacht was seen drifting towards rocks between Hare Island and Renmore Barracks shortly before 9.30am (19:30hr). It was spotted by workers at Galway Docks who alerted the rescue services.

Galway Lifeboat launched within five minutes and got to the vessel just in time. The lifeboat crew searched the boat but no-one was on board and it became apparent that the yacht has broken its moorings. They towed the vessel safely to Galway Docks.

Galway Lifeboat Operations Manager Mike Swan said the yacht appeared to be in danger from the shore.“Due to the quick response, we were able to ascertain no-one was on board and save it from running onto rocks".

The Galway RNLI Lifeboat crew on this callout were: Helmsman Ciaran Oliver, John Byrne and Keith Faller.
